About the Soviet-Afghan War
To support the Afghanistan Communist regime which began in 1978, the USSR sent approximately 100,000 soldiers to Afghanistan. From 1979 to 1989, for 10 years the Soviet-Afghan War was waged. As the war was often fought in the harsh mountainous terrain, donkeys were used for transporting goods for the Soviet soldiers. Also, highly trained German Shepards could often be seen with Army engineers as they were used to help detect land mines placed by Afghan guerrillas.
