About the U.S. 1/4-ton 4x4 Light Vehicle
During the early stage of WW2, Germany achieved outstanding successes by using "Blitzkrieg" tactics with motorized troops. In order to counter this, the Allied nations required tough and reliable vehicles with excellent cross-country ability. In mid 1940, the U.S. Army ordered development of a small sized, multi-purpose 4-wheel drive vehicle to meet this need. The following year the design was complete, with production beginning soon after. As a means of transit for soldiers, the vehicle played a key role in securing Allied victory. It served on various fronts around the world, in every conceivable role. Production reached approximately 640,000 units by August 1945.
