A PT Boat With Plenty of Presence

The PT-15 was the fifth boat of the PT-11 class, which was built as part of the Japanese Self Defense Forces&39; 3rd Defense Plan initiated in 1967. The PT-11 continued where the 1960-vintage PT-10 left off and incorporated the latest torpedo boat technologies at the time. She was 35m long, 9.2m wide, had a standard displacement of 100 tons, and was armed with two 53cm torpedo tubes on each side of the vessel as well as a Bofors 40mm gun forward and aft of the bridge. The aluminum V-shaped hull gave her superb seaworthiness and high-speed performance. Power came from her two "Combined Diesel and Gas" (CODAG) engines which produced a total of 11,000hp to enable a top speed of 40 knots. Construction of the boat began in 1973 at the Mitsubishi Heavy Industries&39; Shimonoseki shipyard and she was completed in July, 1975. After being deployed to the JMSDF Maizuru district, she was transferred to the Yoichi Coastal Defense Group in the Ominato District in October 1990 and patrolled the waters around Hokkaido. In 1993, the Yoichi Coastal Defense Group received missile boats to replace its torpedo boats and the PT-15&39;s career came to an end when she was stricken from the JMSDF register in March 1995.
