This machine first competed in the 11th event of the 2001 WRC season in Sanremo. Unlike the rules for Group A, which do not permit major deviations from the production version, Group N permits drastic alterations such as change of engine placement and revamping of car mechanics. Under the rules of Group N, Mitsubishi's new machine retained the same overall form as the production version but had its guts redesigned for pure rally racing.
