1/48 Macchi MC.200 Saetta
Italian Air Force Thunderbolt
The Italian Air Force sought to reinforce its aircraft strength in 1936 and one of the designs that was adapted was Macchi&39;s MC.202 Saetta. This fighter was powered by a 870hp Fiat A.74 R.C.38 radial engine and was capable of a maximum speed of 503km/h. It initially had an enclosed cockpit, but this was changed to a semi-open type which provided better pilot visibility during production. The raised cockpit position also gave the Saetta a distinctive appearance. They began equipping units in 1939 and debuted in battle over France in June 1940. Although they were lightly armed with only two 12.7mm machine guns, they were very manueverable and were eventually used to good effect from the Mediterranean to Russia. The MC.200 was also notable for being the predecessor of later, more powerful Italian fighters like the MC.202 and MC.205.
