A submarine element was included amongst the escort group for the Japanese Navy&39;s historic attack on Pearl Harbor in WWII. Naval modelers can now recreate another part of the Pearl Harbor strike force with this re-packaged model kit.
The Japanese Navy&39;s daring plan for a surprise attack on the U.S. Navy base at Pearl Harbor called for the use of an Advanced Expeditionary Force made up of 20 fleet submarines. These were mainly to provide a screen and diminish the numbers of any U.S. Navy force that attempted to reach the Japanese carrier group. However, 5 of these fleet submarines, I-16, I-18, I-20, I-22, and I-24, also carried 2-man Ko-hyoteki midget submarines tasked with penetrating the harbor defenses to make torpedo attacks. These midget submarines were launched, but none ever returned from their missions.
