Based on the T-34 chassis, the SU-85 was a tank destroyer armed with an impressive self-propelled 85mm gun. Since the tank did not feature a moving turret, the SU-85 was easy to produce. The vehicle featured a V-2 12-cylinder diesel engine and topped out at 34 mph on roads. Roughly 2,050 Russian SU-85 tank destroyers were built from 1943 until late 1944. The tank destroyer was produced as a counter offense to reports of the new German Panther tank. The SU-85 was not operative in the 1943 battle of Kursk; however, it was used from December 1943 to counter-attack German Panthers and Tiger tanks.
