The 1st-generation Honda City was a phenomenon due to its intriguing "Tall Boy" body styling. The completely redesigned 2nd-generation City released in October 1986 featured a low, wide body design notable for its longer hood, short front and rear overhangs, as well as a generally flush body shape. The compact and efficient 76hp 1,237cc SOHC engine with four valves per cylinder was equivalent in performance to similar DOHC engines at the time. Front MacPherson struts and a rear rigid torsion beam suspension ensured the car was quick. With a responsive engine and crisp handling characteristics, the 2nd-generation Honda City enjoyed wide popularity as a commuter vehicle in Japan.
