Root of the Wing Revolution
The Team Lotus Type 78 showcased its performance in the 1977 race season. Its innovative design featured a slim monocoque with side pontoons, which had undersurfaces shaped like inverted aircraft wings to generate downforce, and instantly rendered all other race car designs obsolete. The two cars were driven by Mario Andretti and Gunnar Nilsson that year, with the former taking victories at the U.S. West, Spanish, French, and Italiah GPs while the latter won at the Belgian GP. The Type 78 also went on to evolve into the even more famous championship-winning Type 79.
