From 1997 on, the Yamaha WCM team received the sponsorship of Austrian sports drink maker Red Bull for the World Road Race GP 500 class. To compete in the &39;99 season, the bike has thoroughly tuned and modified with consideration given to weight distribution, aerodynamics and engine performance. Riders Regis Laconi and Garry McCoy performed well at the Valencia race and earning 1st and 3rd places, respectively. At the recent Phillip Island race, Laconi took 3rd place, demonstrating the strength of the Red Bull Yamaha WCM team.
