The 1968 Marathon De La Route , a gruelling 84-hour event authorized by the FIA, was held at the Nuburgring circuit in Germany on August 21 1968. The Track was 22.8km long, and consisted of a continuously uneven surface and corners of different characteristics. Mazda sent a team two Cosmo Sport (export model name:110S) for this tough race, in order to prove the high performance, durability and reliability of their new rotary engine. The Long-awaited rotary engined Cosmo Sport had been launched on the japanese market in may 1967. Car number 18 was driven by Yoshimi Katayama, Masami Katakura and Nobuo Koga, while Belgian drivers Elde Deprez and Jiper were at the wheel of car number 19. Although both Cosmo Sport completed most of the race with no serious problems, car number 18 was suddenly forced to retire just 150 miniutes before the fminish due to a broken left rear axle shaft. The other Cosmo Sport survived the 84-hour race, finishing 4th overall in its first competitive race. Of the 59 starts, just 26 cars finished this grueling race.
