Mercedes Benz Company begin activities as an engine supplier to sports car races in 1986 and two years later, in 1988, it declared its reopening of works activity, thereby breaking a period of silence which lasted for 33 years. Development of the vehicles was handled by a Swiss constructor under the leadership of Peter Sauber, and participation in the World Sports Prototype Car Championship was started. In the first race, in which the company made a great start as the team Sauber Mersedez, it suddenly won the Pole to win prize, thereby capturing the attention of rival teams. Form the fourth race, the team was strengthened with two car entries The Team then won five out of a series of 12 races, and it struggled for both constructor's and the driver's title up to the end of the season.
