• The Lancia Stratos was the world's firstpurpose-built rally machine a ewvolutionary vehicle featuring FRP front and rear cowlings around a midship design.competition on the WRC circuit increased i intensity throughout the 1970s as the championship boiled down to a contest of raw vechicle power, with compact size/high performance vehicles taking home the wins.Lancia decided to face this challenging new field by dropping its previous policy of building rally machines around stock production cars and,instead, building specail purpose rally machines from the ground up for the sole purpose of winning the wrc title.The first of these vechicles debuted at San Remo,the 5th rally in the 1974WRC seasons,blowing away the competition from start to finish for an impressive victory,going on to win that season's Makes Title.1975 marked the first complete season for the stratos, with the car showing its power with a repeat of its tetle performance of the previous year,a run which continued in the 1976 season,as well,for a third straight title.
• 1977 saw a reduction in stratos circuit participation.1978 saw Lancia mergewith Fiat,resulting in the team dropping the stratos works in favor of the fiat 131.The Stratos came back strong in 1979,however,in the hands of the private Chardonnet Team,whose blue Stratos piloted by Bernard Darniche took the flag at the sason openr at Monte Carlo.The season's tenth race,the Tour De Cors,saw another powerful performance by Darniche and the Chardonnet Team,proving the competitiveness of the car even if only raced by private outfits.
